Gretsch / 6120 Chet Atkins / 1963 / Orange / Guitar
There are no more evocative guitars than the orange Gretsch 6120 and this 1963 model is no exception.
In the early 60’s, Gretsch decided to change the popular 6120, slimming the body from its original 2 7/8” to 2 1/2” by 1962 and introducing a second cutaway for better access. They also added a mechanical mute and some additional switching, doing away with the f hole and painting it on instead.
This guitar is in great condition. The top has faded a little which brings out the grain nicely. There are no marks on the body. The binding, always a point of contention with Gretsches, is intact apart from the base of the neck heel where its has started to break up a little.
The neck is in superb shape and has retained it gloss finish. The fretboard is also in superb shape as are the frets. This guitar shows signs of great care as the headstock shows only very slight sign of wear.
The hardware on this one is exceptional. There is no real signs of wear and everything still has that wonderful gold plated shine. We very rarely see gold plated Gretsch’s this good…
The electronics are in good shape and have remained untouched. The guitar comes with its correct hardshell case which is also in great shape and all intact and working
Sonically this guitar delivers. The unamplified sound has a clear tone that really translates plugged in. Both pickups sound so wonderful, very classic Gretsch and the array of switches add to the tonal palette. The springiness of the Bigsby is also so pleasing.
If you’re on the lookout for a great looking vintage Gretsch then stop immediately and get yourself over here, this may be the one for you!
