Gretsch / 6120 Chet Atkins Hollowbody / 1965 / Sunset Orange / Guitar
The Gretsch 6120 is maybe the most iconic Gretsch model ever made. Introduced in 1954 as an orange coloured 16” hollowbody with western-style decoration, in the following years the model evolved constantly. The western decoration was dropped by 1957 and by 1958 the then new Filtertron pickups replaced the DeArmond Dynasonics. During this period the body depth was also gradually dimished and bracing was added to help prevent feedback. By 1962 the new double cutaway “Electrotone” body shape was introduced and a lever operated string mute was added.
This 6120 is in fully original condition. It left the Gretsch factory in Brooklyn NY by mid 1965. The orange colour is still very vibrant and hasn’t faded much. The original frets are low but playability is great, with a near straight neck and low to medium action. The two Filtertron pickups sound amazing, offering some nice compressed jangle that turns into an aggressive growl with some overdrive added. The Bigsby vibrato has a very nice feel to it as well, it has just the right action and stiffness and return to pitch is actually very good. The mute system’s lever and action are fully functional but currently no rubber pad is fitted.
The original case and the 6120 book by Edward Ball, signed by the author with the serial number of this guitar, are included with the sale.
