Gretsch / 6122 Country Gentleman / 1964 / Walnut / Guitar For Sale

The Gretsch 6122 Country Gentleman is one of the most iconic models in the history of Gretsch guitars. Introduced in 1958 and endorsed by Chet Atkins - the legendary guitarist who played a significant role in its design and popularisation - the Country Gentleman was the top of the line instrument in the Chet Atkins range costing $525 at the time, falling second only to the White Falcon in price.

In 1962 along with a few other models in the Gretsch line up the Country Gent changed from a single cutaway design to the double cutaway 'Electrotone Hollowbody' in order to improve access to the upper frets. This model was adopted by George Harrison and was to become the single most successful guitar ever produced by Gretsch.

This particular example from 1964 features the same specs as Harrison’s legendary instrument, including the double mute, Filter’Tron pickups, Bigsby trem and bar bridge, all with a really attractive, aged gold patina. It retains much of its original charm but a full overspray and later Grover 'stair step' Imperial tuners make it a fantastic, affordable player grade option.

Currently strung with flatwound strings, and with its 24.5 inch scale length and slim 'C' profile neck, this guitar feels really comfortable to play. It has a 42.85mm nut width with a neck depth of 21.38mm at the first fret thickening out to 30.08mm at the 12th.

The dual Filter'Tron pickups provide a bright, articulate sound with clear note separation. These pickups are known for their ability to produce a balanced output with both warmth and clarity, making the 6122 suitable for clean, articulate lead work as well as rhythm playing. The three way tone switch gives even more versatility to it's sound, and with the mute switches and Bigsby trem, this guitar can cover a lot of tonal bases.

While not entirely original, this guitar is an affordable way to own a vintage Harrison-spec Country Gent, not far from the price of a new model. Comes complete with the original hard case.
