Gretsch / G6119 Tennessean / 1966 / Faded Brown / Guitar
The Gretsch 6119 Tennessean was the most affordable model in the Chet Atkins signature range of Gretsches. When introduced in 1958 the Tennessean was a full depth 16" hollowbody guitar (similar to a 6120) with a single Filtertron bridge pickup. In 1962 the model was updated and gained a new thinline body shape with painted on F-holes and a second pickup, although these were changed to Hilotrons. Also the 6119s looks were updated at this time, the red finish was replaced with a dark cherry or mahogany finish with a silver pickguard. Although the Tennessean was not immune to the changes the Baldwin regime introduced later on, the model remained quite popular and was pretty much produced until the end of Gretsch in 1981. When production of Gretsch guitars was resumed in the late '80s in japan the 6119 was reissued as the “Tennessee Rose” model.
This 1966 Tennessean is fully original. The electronics and pickups work without issues and this guitar has that typical ‘60s beat sound you’d expect from a nice Gretsch of the era. It has a pale but very appealing mahogany finish with a nice woodgrain visible through the transparent finish. The bindings are still in good shape except for the heel cap that shows typical for Gretsch binding rot and is somewhat cracked but still in one piece. The neck set is stable and angled well so the sound is great even played acoustically and the guitar can still be adjusted for a low action. The serial number is somewhat strange: in 1966 Gretsch changed from a sequential to a datecoded serial number system. For a short interim period a four-digit system was used; this guitar is an example of this shortlived style of numbering.
