Guild / Starfire 1 / 1961 / Cherry / Guitar
The Guild Starfire made its way onto the scene in 1960. After entering the folk market with their acoustic guitar line they decided to properly focus on the electric market. Conceived as an alternative to Gibson’s thinline ES guitars, the Starfire I, II and III semi-hollow range was born and so was the Starfire legacy.
The Starfire I had one DeArmond single-coil, 24 3/4″ scale, 20 fret rosewood fingerboard and a cherry finish.
This example is all correct, with original frets, hardware, and finish. Condition is good too, with no breaks or cracks and just the usual scratches and dings you expect of a 60 year old instrument. It came to us as part of a large consignment of guitars from a collector, and it appears that this was his “jazz” guitar as it was strung with flats. We’ve given it a fresh lease of life with some round wounds that have released a whole load of brightness from the guitar, and now it really sings!
There’s something about single pickup guitars that just always seems to hit the right sonic spot, and this is no different. The DeArmond pickup is obviously on the warm side due to its positioning, but it sounds great and isn’t overly bass heavy.
The guitar comes with a guild hard case, although we think it may be from the 70s. The original case carry handle has snapped off and is in the case pocket, although for now a pair of cable ties seem to be doing the trick!
This is a great alternative to something like a 330 or a Casino, and will make for something unique in your collection, don’t miss out…
