Martin / 00-17 - Bernie Marsden Collection / 1940 / Natural Mahogany / Guitar For Sale
From the Bernie Marsden collection, this 1940 Martin 00-17 was used during the Shine album from 2014, in particular the track Linin Track. This guitar is featured on page 27 of Bernie's hardback book 'Tales of Tone and Volume' a copy of which will be included with this sale.
The 00 body shape is one of Martin’s oldest, dating back to 1898. The first 00-17s were produced in 1908. The style 17 initially combined Spruce top with Mahogany back and sides dating initially from 1956 to 1898 and subsequently from 1906 to 1916. The style was then re-launched in 1922 as all Mahogany construction and Martin’s first steel string guitar. The 14th fret neck joint came in the early 30’s at the request of banjo players.
This guitar is in great condition, a few knocks and bumps and the expected scratches from a lifetime of inspiration. There are no signs of any cracks or repairs but the edge of the body has been rounded in some places as you'd expect without any binding.
The neck is very comfortable and here there is the expected wear. The fretboard is in great condition. It's been refretted at some stage and there's plenty of life left in the frets. The neck looks to have been reset, the work having been done very sympathetically. The headstock shows the marks from having had some different tuners fitted and there are currently two different sets of tuners on there, some looking newer than others. The holes haven’t been widened.
The bridge looks solid and there is no sign of any bellying or issues with the bracing.
The guitar comes with a hardshell case.
A warm and punchy tone, this guitar is a joy to play and perfectly showcases why we all clammer for these pre-war Martins.
A truly inspiring guitar with a great story to tell. Grab it before its gone…
