Martin / 1967 D-35 / 1967 / Guitar
Precious D-35 of the Jacaranda period
The D-35, Martin's first guitar with a three-piece back body, was first prototyped in 1965 and officially released in 1966. The binding on the body and neck is also applied. The 3-piece back gives the D-35 a brighter and more extended tone with less bass than the D-28. In addition, the unique characteristics of Jacaranda wood are added, resulting in better separation, brighter treble and fuller sound.
It is said that the X-bracing, which is a little lower in height than the D-28, contributed to the D-35's unique response and rich midrange. The D-35 is well-balanced for both strokes and fingers, making it an ideal model for musicians with a playing style.
This instrument is a 1967 machine-pressed S/N #2288XX with square rods, maple bridge plate, "PAT PEND" engraved glover, and black acetate pickguard. The fine weather check on the entire body gives it an austere and dignified look. The pickguard had been shrinking and cracking under the guard, so it was reupholstered and painted after the cracks were fixed, and finished close to the original paint job. The lacquer coating on the back of the neck had become sticky, so it was repainted with a fabric coating for playability.
The neck is generally straight and the string height at the 12th fret is about 2.5mm for the 6th string, 2.1mm for the 1st string, and the saddle height is about 2.0mm. The frets are a little dented in the low position, but there is no tumbling or chattering, and it plays well. The neck is a little thicker than the rest, and it has a nice mid-range core sound.
