Martin / D-18 / 1964 / Natural / Guitar

C. F. Martin D-18 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1964), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 197746, natural lacquer finish, mahogany back, sides and neck, spruce top, Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and bridge, black tolex hard shell case.

A fine sounding D-18 from the heyday of the "Folk Era". From its introduction in the early 1930s on, the D-18 has been a workhorse for country, gospel, folk and other forms of American vernacular music. Back in the 1960s, it was the emblem of the Folk Revival and, today, it still is the acoustic guitar of choice for flat-pickers of every persuasion.

This 1964 D-18 has appointments typical of the era; The pickguard and binding are tortoise celluloid, the rosewood bridge has the long saddle and the tuners are Grover Imperials. The headstock's "rounded" corners are characteristic of this period, the result of Martin's shaping templates becoming worn from extensive use.

Overall length is 41 in. (104.1 cm.), 15 3/4 in. (40 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 5 in. (12.7 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). All original except a newer compensated saddle; overall very nice with some old crack repairs and an open jackhole on the treble side. There is some moderately heavy pickwear around the soundhole, and small nicks and dings overall. The bridge has been lowered and there is some noticeable fretwear but the guitar still plays well and sounds great with a nice dry woody yet powerful tone. Excellent Condition.
