Martin / D-28 / 1953 / Natural / Guitar
C. F. Martin D-28 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1953), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 128918, natural lacquer finish, Brazilian rosewood back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, period black hard shell case.
This fine old D-28 dates to the "golden era" of postwar Country music: in the early 1950's, before Rockabilly and Rock'n'Roll in general eroded the market somewhat. This one has a powerful midrangey tone and would make a fabulous instrument for wholly acoustic Bluegrass and acoustic/electric Honky Tonk styles. It features the now much sought-after Brazilian rosewood back and sides with a nice even straighter grain pattern. The original "Waffleback" Kluson Sealfast tuners are still in place; this guitar has been fairly well played but also well-maintained and carries a great period vibe.
Overall length is 41 in. (104.1 cm.), 15 3/4 in. (40 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 15/16 in. (12.5 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). Overall a very good playing example showing definite signs of use but no major issues for its 60+ years. The guitar has general wear overall including some dings into the top and light pickwear around the fingerboard and soundhole-the top edge of which exhibits some slight wood loss. The neck has been reset and refretted in the correct period style, and the bridge is a full-height somewhat later replacement. A nice period D-28, that does everything it's supposed to do! Excellent - Condition.
