Martin / D18 / 1947 / Guitar For Sale

At The Fellowship of Acoustics we regularly have beautiful vintage guitars from Martin hanging in our shop, but we don't see a D18 from the '40s all that often! A guitar like this is an absolute dream guitar for many, and it is not without reason that the D18 is one of the absolute legends in the acoustic guitar world. Despite its lower numbering, the model is definitely not the little brother of the D28, but distinguishes itself from its rosewood counterpart by mahogany back and sides. Almost 80 years ago, production figures were not as high as they are today, but Martin still sold a respectable 775 D18s in 1947. Nevertheless, guitars from the post-war period are very rare, because it is questionable how many have remained in such a beautiful condition as this D18 with serial number 99874. The model was equipped with a 14 fret neck construction in 1934, and received several modifications over the years such as a tortoise binding in 1938, a rosewood fingerboard in 1940, non-scalloped bracing in 1944 and finally a Sitka spruce top instead of Adirondack in 1946. This example has been well maintained over the years, which means that it still plays very nicely today. And what a power comes from this dreadnought! It does not even need a pickup, because with its powerful sound and great balance this is every bluegrass player's dream. The name Gene Evans can be read on both the heel block and one of the braces, and a search through obscure websites teaches us that this is the name of a guitarist who played with Buddy Holly and Paul McCartney, among others. We do not know for sure whether this guitar was actually owned by this guitarist, but this story certainly reinforces the myth surrounding this guitar. The guitar has also undergone a refret and neck reset, and during the latter operation a shim was also placed under the fingerboard to raise the neck slightly. The bridge and bridge saddle have also been replaced. Furthermore, the playwear on the back of the body and neck shows the many hours of playing time that this D18 has received over the years, and the guitar has acquired an irresistible appearance as a result. Without a doubt the crowning glory of any guitar collection! Played by Erwin van de Ven | Demo Gear: Ear Trumpet Labs Edwina Microphone

ABOUT US

I have always been opposed to being trapped into a job eight hours a day to purchase the free time to do what I enjoy. That’s why i started the Fellowship of Acoustics. The fellowship of acoustics was founded by Rudi Bults, Guitarist and obsessed with tone and wood. The idea was offering real expertise when trading and selling the finest instruments in the world from our showroom in Bergentheim, Netherlands. Helping others find the right tools and enjoying an atmosphere that’s unhurried, honest and informative that’s my go. We are nothing like the "supermarket" style music stores, but specialize in string-things only. We are widely known for Flattop guitars but also sell electric, mandolins & banjo’s, amps, parts, and accessories. Our store has earned the reputation for being a great place to shop for the best products and service.
It is our hope that this new website - much more than a list of "gear" for sale - will serve as an example of our commitment to offering a more personal approach, a friendly atmosphere, and an ultimately more satisfying experience for our friends and customers.
If you have any questions just dial +31-523-232205 or e-mail info@thefellowshipofacoustics.com My name is Rudi Bults, and I’m always here to help out. Wherever possible, we would recommend that you visit our store and experience our instruments and service first hand. However, because of our high standards you can be confident of ordering online from us. We hope you enjoy your visit to our site, and welcome your feedback.
