Martin / D18 / 1949 / Guitar

1949 Martin D-18 with Serial # 110179. The D-18 shows the almighty dreadnought in one of it's most coveted forms using mahogany for the back and sides and Sitka spruce for the top. This model was designed to have no frills and is all about pure, powerful, warm tone. The first thing you'll notice when picking up this guitar is it's lightweight construction which adds to the overall resonance of this instrument. This is one of those guitars that just feels "loose", open and ready for you to give it all you got seemingly without limit. Certainly after all those years the sound of this guitar is best described as "vintage dry", matured like a great vintage wine but with plenty of high end sparkle and bite for all of your powerful bluegrass licks. The years and previous owners have been kind to this instrument, it was probably kept in guitar-friendly environmental conditions at all times allowing the tonewood plenty of time to dry out and keep it from forming any cracks. Modifications/alterations done to this instrument are all expected; a neck set, refret and a slightly shaved down bridge. Otherwise it is in Very Good condition showing below-average amounts of playwear and signs of use for it's age. Measurements are just as you'd want them to be with a 43mm (1 11/16") nutwidth on the nice and firmly C-shaped mahogany neck, 55mm (2 3/16") string spacing and of course the 645mm (25 3/8") scale length. Our shop has provided this instrument with a great setup and a new bridge saddle which means it does not only sound fantastic, but but also plays great. For the vintage Martin collector this should be a no-brainer, the allmighty dreadnought in one of it's truest forms. The instrument travels savely in a newer (very recent) Martin hardshell case.  Body Shape: Dreadnought Finish: Natural Body Material: Mahogany Top Material: Spruce Lefty No Body Details: Tortoise bindings Neck Material: Mahogany Neck Profile: Firm C-shape Fingerboard Material: Rosewood Fingerboard Radius: 16” Neck Details: Dot inlay Nutwidth: 43 mm - 1 11/16" Scale Length: 645 mm - 25 3/8" String spacing: 55 mm - 2 3/16" Bridge: Rosewood Tuners: Original Grover open backed Pickup None Condition: Very Good Cosmetic Condition: Overall a clean look for a guitar from this era with playwear and signs of use mainly focussed in the finish of the top, back, and back of the neck Modifications/, Repairs: Neck Reset, Refret, Shaved down bridge Tech Notes: None Travels in: Newer Martin Hardshell case Accessories: None NJ

ABOUT US

I have always been opposed to being trapped into a job eight hours a day to purchase the free time to do what I enjoy. That’s why i started the Fellowship of Acoustics. The fellowship of acoustics was founded by Rudi Bults, Guitarist and obsessed with tone and wood. The idea was offering real expertise when trading and selling the finest instruments in the world from our showroom in Bergentheim, Netherlands. Helping others find the right tools and enjoying an atmosphere that’s unhurried, honest and informative that’s my go. We are nothing like the "supermarket" style music stores, but specialize in string-things only. We are widely known for Flattop guitars but also sell electric, mandolins & banjo’s, amps, parts, and accessories. Our store has earned the reputation for being a great place to shop for the best products and service.
It is our hope that this new website - much more than a list of "gear" for sale - will serve as an example of our commitment to offering a more personal approach, a friendly atmosphere, and an ultimately more satisfying experience for our friends and customers.
If you have any questions just dial +31-523-232205 or e-mail info@thefellowshipofacoustics.com My name is Rudi Bults, and I’m always here to help out. Wherever possible, we would recommend that you visit our store and experience our instruments and service first hand. However, because of our high standards you can be confident of ordering online from us. We hope you enjoy your visit to our site, and welcome your feedback.
