Morley Tel-Ray / PPA Pik Percussion Attack (230V!) / 1980 / Chrome / Effect
Here’s a rare and quirky Tel-Ray made Morley pedal in mint condition and in a technically perfect condition. It’s a 230V version for use in the EU. I’ve dated this pedal as made in 1980 based on the codes of the Carling switches and the AC transformer inside the pedal.
Apart from working great as an optical buffered volume pedal with a very wide travel this device has some very unusual sounds and tricks up its sleeve:
In the “Repeat Percussion” mode there’s a deep square-wave tremolo effect. The speed of this effect is set with the rocker pedal so it can be adjusted on the fly.
Used combined with the metal plectrum plugged into the pedal, in the “Variable Attack” mode the pedal works as a reverse envelop simulator. The sound is cut out when the plectrum hits a string and swells at a speed that is dictated by the rocker pedal position. This makes it possible to replicate reverse-tape or bowed sounds quite convincingly, especially with some added delay or reverb. Because the effect is triggered by the pick it’s always perfectly in sync with the player.
The “PIK Percussion” mode is similar but adds a treble boost effect to the swell, which gives the sound more edge and the ability to cut through the mix a bit better.
The pedal comes with the original manual. The metal pick with connection cord is a new reproduction of the original but works in the exact same way. Again, this pedal works on 230V AC only so for use in the USA a 110-230V step-up transformer would be necessary to operate the pedal.
