Musicman / Stingray 1 / 1977 / Sunburst / Guitar
This 1977 Musicman Stringray I is a guitar you don’t see to often. Designed in 1976 by Leo Fender, who became chairman of Musicman that year, it was the first commercially available guitar to feature active electronics. The Stingray guitar came in two varieties, the Stingray I & II, with the only difference being that the Stingray I featured a 12″ fretboard radius contrary to Fender’s typical 7,5″ radius featured on the Stingray II.
This early Musicman model shows allot of familiar elements traceable to earlier designs by Leo Fender, such as for the 3-bolt neck and the String-thru body construction. Though this is a string-thru design the bridge itself reminds me a bit of the later Duo-Sonic bridges in appearance, while the offset body gives it a feel reminiscent of a Jazzmaster. Just like the Jazzmaster, the body of the Stingray is a bit bigger in comparision to for instance a Strat, and as this came with beat up acoustic case, I had to acquire a new Jazzmaster case for it as a regular one wouldn’t fit.
Although there are many familiar features, the innovative electronics are what set this guitar apart from previous designs. The low-impedance humbuckers with there big pole-pieces are wired to an active pre-amp which allows for independent control over treble and bass similar in operation to a tone-stack on an amp for example. The 4-way rotary switch offer three different pickup combinations plus an out-of-phase setting, making this all together a very versatile instrument that offers a broad variety of very useable sounds.
This 1977 Stingray remains in excellent vintage condition, meaning some wear is to be expected, but overall it’s still very clean, especially considering it’s age. During the first production period nitrocellulose finishes were used on these, so there is some checking here and there as well a bit of chipping near the control-cavity. All electronics and soldering have remained untouched. The medium jumbo fret’s are still in pretty good shape.
Historically this is a very interesting instrument for both Fender and Musicman enthusiasts and collectors. It’s also still a very affordable vintage piece that offers allot of unique tonal possibilities.
