National / Tricone / 1928 / Chrome / Guitar

Circa 1928, was owned by a rather upscale young lady of 87(!) whose father gave her the guitar back in the late 30's, early 40's...She used to sing and play popular tunes on it. She kept the guitar displayed in her den, But rarely played it as time went on, or even took it out of the house, as she felt it was too heavy and big for a 'Lady' to carry around. The guitar never left the house, as far as she remembered.  When I first saw it I thought it must have been re- plated it was so clean and original. On closer inspection, however, we realized the guitar was bone stock, and my luthier and I were the first ones to open her up. The paper gaskets are original and unchanged, as are the cones.Their is one little dent on the lower treble side and that hit must have caused the cones to shift about a half inch - so the guitar sounded lousy.  There is very little playing wear in the neck. The decal has peeled some, but is still visible. The dent, which is small and roundish, is not on the edge, so it could be easily pushed out. It must have banged against something roundish, as the dent has no crimping or edges. Personally, as the dent is NOT CLEARLY VISIBLE, unless you look for it, I would keep it, as it's one of the only things, besides the inside of the guitar, that shows any real age, other than the neck. Anyone who knows these guitars, or vintage guitars for that matter, will know immediately what this guitar is. Non guitar people will think it's five year old guitar. In twenty three years, I've never seen another like it, in this kind of shape, in all original condition, with the original case.

If you love old, classic guitars you owe it to yourself to check this place out. The place is tiny; basically what you see in the display window is most of what they got. Go inside and it's like dropping in to a friend's apartment, albeit a tiny apt. But it's cool; Dan and whoever else is there are just hanging out. If you need help, they're glad to do it but if you just want to hang, they'll give you space. They let me put a lot of time in with the guitar that I eventually bought and also let me play an incredibly expensive guitar just so I could see what it felt like.

But what I really like is that they're just regular, no BS kinda people who obviously love old guitars for their character. Some of what they've got is collector-level expensive but I bought an awesome Japanese tele copy at a really reasonable price. So whatever

We are also home of the Chelsea Hotelecaster - Telecasters made out of civil war era pine from the legendary Chelsea hotel NYC. Made by our resident luthier Dean Gordon.
