Selmer / Bouche Ronde #441 / 1938 / Guitar For Sale

Founded by Henri Selmer in the early 20th century, Selmer Guitars quickly became synonymous with jazz music, particularly through their association with legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt. In the 1930s, Selmer collaborated with luthier Mario Maccaferri to produce innovative guitars, including the iconic Selmer-Maccaferri models. These guitars, featuring a distinctive oval soundhole and a unique design, revolutionized jazz guitar playing. Despite their relatively short production period, Selmer guitars left an indelible mark on the history of jazz and continue to be revered by musicians and collectors alike. Selmer guitars underwent significant modifications in the late 1930s following the departure of Mario Maccaferri in 1933. With the aim of catering to the evolving needs of professional guitarists, Selmer implemented several changes to the original design. One notable alteration was the removal of the internal soundbox and the abandonment of the distinctive D-shaped soundhole characteristic of Maccaferri's designs. During this transitional period, Selmer guitars predominantly featured smaller oval soundholes, a departure from the previous D-shaped ones. However, a select few models, including the example we have here, retained the round soundhole design. Despite this difference, these guitars remained true in specifications to the earlier Maccaferri models, featuring a 645mm scale, 12-fret neck, and a four-brace top construction. These modifications marked a significant shift in the design and sound of Selmer guitars. While the internal soundbox removal and change in soundhole shape contributed to a departure from Maccaferri's original vision, they also resulted in guitars that better met the demands of professional musicians. Selmer's commitment to innovation and adaptation ensured that their instruments continued to maintain a prominent presence in the world of jazz and acoustic guitar playing, leaving an indelible mark on the history of guitar craftsmanship. Renowned for its unparalleled tonal balance, this instrument delivers beautifully rounded highs, rich mids, and a full, clear bass – attributes accentuated by its 12-fret neck design. Its warm, resonant tone possesses a pianistic-like quality, lending itself equally well to lead playing and chordal accompaniment. With its original hardware intact and minor repairs completed, including glued or cleated top cracks and replaced frets showing mild wear, this guitar stands as a testament to Selmer's legacy of craftsmanship and innovation. Surviving examples of pre-war Selmers, let alone this super rare roundhole variant, are notoriously elusive, making it a coveted treasure for collectors and enthusiasts alike. I have always been opposed to being trapped into a job eight hours a day to purchase the free time to do what I enjoy. That’s why i started the Fellowship of Acoustics. The fellowship of acoustics was founded by Rudi Bults, Guitarist and obsessed with tone and wood. The idea was offering real expertise when trading and selling the finest instruments in the world from our showroom in Bergentheim, Netherlands. Helping others find the right tools and enjoying an atmosphere that’s unhurried, honest and informative that’s my go. We are nothing like the "supermarket" style music stores, but specialize in string-things only. We are widely known for Flattop guitars but also sell electric, mandolins & banjo’s, amps, parts, and accessories. Our store has earned the reputation for being a great place to shop for the best products and service.
