The Shaftesbury Duo Fuzz: one of the most sought-after fuzz pedals of all time and proof that the devil does have all the best tunes…

A Shaftesbury Duo Fuzz made in Japan by Shin-ei for Rose Morris in the UK, this pedal is in excellent working order & very good cosmetic condition for a pedal dating from the mid 60s to the early 70s (see detailed photos).

I'd previously thought the hype about these pedals was crazy... until I finally got to try one out. Now I wouldn't be without mine - my 'Desert Island' fuzz pedal: it's the one I'd save if the studio caught fire - adds bags of oomph to whatever you put through it. Filth, fuzz, octave and attitude: it doesn't get any better, or nastier, than this. Makes a Tele kick sand in Les Paul's face...

A guitarist friend who's a real tonehound tried out a bunch of our favourite vintage fuzz pedals and this one just put a huge grin on his face immediately: it stood out from the crowd (and a fine crowd - early Muffs, Lovetone, Tonebender, Analogman, etc etc). He couldn't stop playing through it - 'it just inspires and amazes. Great big chunks of filth and grunt. Awesome!'

The GigRig website features a well-written and informative article on the Duo Fuzz - I can't improve on Dan Steinhardt's description of what this pedal is about: Some of the fuzz circuits created way back when made your guitar sound like a buzz saw, which is fine but very harsh. The Duo-Fuzz has this amazing quality of actually working with the tone of your guitar enabling you to squeeze every nuance from your instrument. It's a sound that is so enjoyable you immediately stop over playing. The simplest blues lick played through this thing makes you sound like an axe toting deity. There is an emphasis on the upper harmonics, especially the first octave, so notes just jump out at you. I can honestly say I've never had so much fun with a fuzz pedal in my life.

This pedal is in perfect working order - no crackly pots or noisy switch issues.

Fitted with a new Duracell Industrial battery and ready to play.

Famously used by Steve Hackett of Genesis. Identical to the Univox Superfuzz as used by Pete Townshend, Josh Homme, Billy Corgan etc etc.

If it seems expensive, here's Dan from the GigRig site again: How much should I pay? An objects' worth can only truly be measured by what someone is willing to pay to acquire it. I can tell you that a major rock star (name rhymes with 'Fryin Madams') offered £800 for this example, and was turned down. Now that may seem over the top, but guitarists just will not sell them because they are irreplaceable. It all comes down to the value of tone to you. What are you willing to pay for it? In the words of the great philosopher Homer, ' I've always had a hole in my life, a sort of emptiness that I've tried to fill it with friends, family, religion and all to no avail. I think this might just do it!'

Soundgas grew out of one man's love of interesting and vintage instruments and recording gear. Initially, it was just satisfying gearlust for old and unusual sonic gear to fill the studio. This has grown over the past 12 years of trading on Ebay, most notably as Ainternational (100% positive feedback on over 700 transactions worldwide), into Soundgas Ltd. Based in the UK, on the edge of the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District, we've a wealth of experience of sourcing and sending delicate and precious gear worldwide.

We find good examples of interesting, rare and classic gear and ensure that our customers receive them in as perfect working order as possible. We appreciate fine, unusual, quirky and well-engineered recording equipment and instruments: that appreciation shines through in everything we do. First and foremost we ourselves are musicians, engineers, collectors and customers.

What started out as a passion and sideline has evolved into a business with a client list that reflects our commitment to good old-fashioned customer care and attention to detail (and a love of cool, strange and oddball vintage gear).

We mail out a monthly stocklist to our customers which contains many items that never make it to Vintage & Rare or Ebay (head over to the website to register).
