Shin-ei / Uni-Vibe / 1969 / Original / Effect For Sale
Designed by audio engineer Fumio Mieda to mimic the sound of radio signals from Russia undergoing atmospheric modulation, the Univibe was first introduced in 1967 as the Honey Vibra Chorus but took on its more familiar form in 1968 following the collapse of Honey and Shin-ei taking up the design. It was also at this point that the external speed control was added.
This unit has been well cared for. The front panel is in good shape with a few chips but nothing that detracts from the look. Overall this unit is in great cosmetic condition.
On the underside there is a Dymo label stating this unit belonged to Jimi Hendrix and there is an accompanying letter. The Tappy that's referred to is James ‘Tappy’ Wright who was Jimi’s co-manager with Mike Jefferies. Crucially, his name is spelt White on the letter and the signature says Tappy White. As such we believe both things to be fake.
Inside there seems to be no modification or changes. The treadle is missing and has been replaced with a footswitch and control knob.
Gilmour, Trower, Hendrix, McCready, four reasons why you should try a Univibe at least once. Nothing comes close to the original. All that wonderful modulation is here.
Iconic and you won’t get that sound any other way. Grab this one before its gone…
