Silvertone / 1482 / 1966 / Amp
The 1963 Sears catalog introduced the 1480 series of amplifiers for their popular Silvertone line of electric guitars and amplifiers. Sears contracted with the Danelectro company of Neptune, NJ to build the 1481-1485 series that stayed in the catalog until about 1967. The 1482 had a very similar design to the brown face era Fender Deluxe using a 12″ speaker, two 6V6 power tubes, two 12AX7 preamp tubes and tremolo effect built in. The Silvertone version tends to break up just a bit earlier than the Fender and also has bit darker tone. It can really smooth out a quacky Telecaster and compliment a meaty 335 neck pickup. These amps are very responsive to the guitar pickup and dynamically react to the player’s style.
This 1966 Sears Silvertone 1482 has survived in wonderful structural and cosmetic condition and continues to perform like it did back in the day. I purchased it from the original owner who confirms that it was played very little then stored away in the closet until now. This one does not show signs of leaky capacitors/drifted resistors, weak speaker or gummed up potentiometers. It is completely original down to the two prong power supply. The only repairs are a light potentiometer cleaning and an unprofessional speaker wire splice (they’re hardwired to the chassis). The cabinet is structurally sound without smashed corners or ripped covering. There is only one spot on the side that appears to have a 1/4″ spot of paint on it.
The Sears Silvertone 1482 is one of the hottest amps around today and clean examples are very difficult to find. This one is an excellent example and is ready to go in the studio or on tour (ask me about a 3 prong power supply install).
