Tobias / Standard 5 **ON HOLD ** / 1991 / Red / Bass
We've had a couple of American, pre- Gibson Tobias basses over the years and they are exactly what the legends say they are: exceptional instruments. There is no doubt about the quality and tone that possessed those early basses so when I first spotted this red 5- string, I was hoping that it was part of the 400 or so bass run from the Terada factory in Japan. Well luck of all lucks, it is one of those great instruments and after sitting down with it for a good few minutes, I'm completely satisfied that it is indeed a lot of Tobias bass for $1200.00. The construction is top- notch and the twin Bartolinis do more than their job in the tone department. It's very active sounding and when ran through my little SWR rig and easily covers any of the songs I attempted to coax from it.You can also dial the highs back a bit to get a deep, vintage P- bass or J- bass tone. Simply put, this bass more than holds it's own with any of the active, American- made 5- bangers we have in the Elkcave and if you need a professional- grade bass on a working bassist's budget, this is definitely the one to have. And, you'll not go entirely unnoticed onstage with this thing being one of the brightest red basses we've ever seen painted up. Red, really, really red. Nothing wrong with that, folks...
